Lambs: A Race to Finish: An on farm sheep health and productivity event

1st September 2016

Moredun and Rhug Estate are delighted to announce a free day meeting designed to help farmers and vets achieve more effective control of disease and increase productivity within sheep flocks. The event will be held at Rhug Estate, Corwen, Denbighshire LL21 0EH on Thursday 1st September by kind permission of Lord Newborough.

Rhug Estate covers 12,500 acres with the 6,700 acre in-hand organic farm the geographical core of the estate. The farm achieved organic status in 2000 and now has its own butchery and retail premises on site and prides itself in providing top quality organic lamb, beef, bison, chicken and pork to prestigious markets worldwide. The highest standards in animal health and welfare, alongside sound environmental management, attention to detail and customer satisfaction have seen this business grow from an employer of 9 to 110 people in the space of 20 years.

Healthy and productive sheep are key to the efficiency and profitability of any flock so talks and discussions throughout the day will focus on parasite control: liver fluke; roundworms; Nematodirus and tick, as well as the importance of using health plans in the production of prime lambs from a buyer’s perspective and a vision of the future for lambs in the hills from Phil Stocker, NSA.

A farm tour is also on offer guided by farm manager, Gareth Jones and after lunch a panel discussion, chaired by John Yeomans, will involve 4 key people in the industry, Phil Stocker, NSA; Julie Fitzpatrick, Moredun; Jon Morgan, Livestock Marketing and Gwyn Jones, Wern Vets. This will give everyone the opportunity to discuss further the topics covered in the morning and other important issues you want to raise with the panel. We hope you will be able to join us for what promises to be an informative and entertaining day.

This free livestock health meeting has been organised by Moredun, a world leader in research into the health and welfare of livestock and is part of a National Livestock Health Roadshow. The meeting begins at 10am and is open to all, please RSVP to beth.wells@moredun.ac.uk  by 22nd August.  For further information contact The Communications Team at Moredun on 0131 445 5111 or visit www.moredun.org.uk/events .
