A Special issue of Molecular Immunology has been released this month highlighting Non-rodent animal models for Immunology Research.
Research in large animals has provided pivotal information to immunology in the past and it has become very apparent (notably Veterinary Vaccinology Network Conference this year as well as other similar workshops) that there is a need to develop new animal models that are more adapted to the scientific question at hand.
Immunological research in animals is necessary not only for animal wellbeing alone but also for the economic benefit as well as providing beneficial One Health research; this includes tackling zoonotic diseases and preventing diseases in large animals that may benefit human disease vaccinology.
This special issue focuses on 10 papers identifying large animal models including horses, swine, cattle, sheep and goats and how these models contribute to immunological understanding. These papers highlight considerable knowledge within immunology and aid in evaluating veterinary vaccinology.
