Animal & Plant Health Agency
My main interest is in the zoonotic disease brucellosis and the development of applied tools (vaccines, diagnostics, molecular epidemiology) to combat it. I lead the R&D within the National Reference Laboratory for Great Britain at the APHA. This is also an OIE Reference Laboratory for Brucellosis and an FAO and WHO collaborating centre for this disease. Because we are disease free I have a particular need to work with institutes and teams from other countries in order to obtain resources to develop my work and also to evaluate its impact. APHA is an executive agency, sponsored by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, the Welsh Government and The Scottish Government. It has a remit to safeguard animal and plant health for the benefit of people, the environment and the economy. The APHA is home to more OIE Reference Laboratories than any other organisation with expertise in a wide range of diseases of veterinary and zoonotic significance.
