I am responsible for a research department of ~250 scientists and support staff. The major activities are focused on R&D of infectious disease vaccines and therapeutics. We develop and use animal models for vaccine research. I also have responsibility for two UK NHP (macaque) colonies. Our models focus on both low and high containment pathogens with unique capability in aerosol delivery of both pathogens and vaccines. We have one of the largest infectious disease animal modeling capabilities in Europe and can cover mouse to monkeys and CL1 to CL4 pathogens. Interface between NHP and clinical immunology. Advanced imaging in life CT to quantify disease progress/burden. Vaccine specific projects:
TB: Ag discovery, vaccine evaluation, correlates of protection. Of the 12 vaccines in the clinic 9 had their pre-clinical assessment performed at Porton
Influenza; vaccine R&D, animal model development, correlates of protection
Emerging diseases and biothreat agent vaccine R&D including: monkeypox, anthrax and Burkholderia
Zoonotics: primarily CCHF vaccine research and animal models
Several programmes of vaccine research in bacterial vaccines including MenB, Pertussis and Chlamydia
We have an extensive national and international network of collaborators and have a research alliance with the University of Southampton. We are also supporting the new Veterinary School initiative at the university of Surrey.
