I am currently working as a postdoc at the Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling, on an EU project entitled TargetFish. The aim of TargetFish is to develop vaccines for European aquaculture species and improve existing vaccines/delivery methods. I am working on developing a vaccine for Flavobacterium psychrophilum, the causative agent of Rainbow Trout Fry Syndrome (RTFS). This disease causes huge losses every year in the trout industry and attempts to develop a vaccine have been hampered by the heterogeneity of strains of Flavobacterium found in association with the disease. I am also working on developing bead based multiplex assays to detect viral and bacterial pathogens of fish to detect co-infections that commonly occur in aquaculture species. Rapid diagnosis is essential in maintaining the health status of stocks and informing treatment strategies.
