I hold the joint appointment of Group Leader PRRS Immunology at The Pirbright Institute and Senior Lecturer Veterinary Immunology at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Surrey. I have a longstanding interest in understanding the role of T cells in protective immunity and the application of this knowledge to the development of new or improved vaccines. My recent research has focused on the development of improved vaccines for classical swine fever (CSF) and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS). This research has taken a multi-strand approach involving: (1) Evaluation of the interaction of dendritic cells (DCs) with field and vaccine virus strains; (2) Investigation of the induction of protective immune responses in local lymphoid tissues by transcriptomics; (3) Characterizing the role of T cell responses in immunity to CSF and PRRS; (4) Identification and characterization of vaccine candidate T cell antigens from CSFV and PRRSV; (5) Evaluation of the effects of pathogen-associated molecular patterns on porcine DC subsets for inclusion as molecular vaccine adjuvants; and (6) Evaluation of nanoparticulate vaccine formulations for the induction of protective immune responses.
