A leading Pirbright scientist has been honoured by the Pakistan Academy of Sciences (PAS) for his exceptional contributions to science and innovation.

Professor Munir Iqbal, Head of the Avian Influenza and Newcastle Disease group at The Pirbright Institute, has been elected as a Foreign Fellow of PAS - one of the Academy’s highest accolades. The announcement was made at the PAS General Body Meeting held in Islamabad in December 2025.

The award recognises Prof. Iqbal’s international leadership in the field of avian virology, particularly his pioneering work on avian influenza virus surveillance, molecular diagnostics, and vaccine development. His research has helped protect both animal and human health by informing disease control strategies around the world.

Reflecting on the award, Prof. Iqbal said:

"I am truly honoured to be recognised by the Pakistan Academy of Sciences. This accolade is not only a reflection of my work, but also of the collective efforts of my exceptional team at The Pirbright Institute, whose dedication and expertise in avian influenza research lie at the heart of our success. This also reflects Pirbright's mission to advance global health and improve disease control, working to protect both animals and humans from the evolving threats posed by animal viruses."

The PAS General Body also announced the recipients of its 2025 Gold Medals and Prizes, along with the election of new Fellows and Members.

The Academy reaffirmed its commitment to recognising excellence in scientific research and supporting innovation for national and global benefit.
